寛永8年（1627年）の大吹鉱山発見から約350年もの間、見立地区は鉱山とともに歩みました。大正末期から第2次世界大戦の直前まで、見立鉱山の経営・採掘は、ハンス・
ハンター氏の手に委ねられ、英国の鉱山技術導入とともに技師たちが招かれました。
彼らの宿舎、そして大切なお客様のための迎賓館として建てられたのが英国館（見立鉱山倶楽部）です。日本建築と洋風建築をひとつにした独特の様式は、現存する数少ない貴重な建物のひとつになっており、平成１３年国の有形登録文化財に登録されました。長い歴史の重みと、異国の香り漂う静寂な世界、英国館は訪れる人の心を癒し、温かく迎えてくれます。 |

| England House, a recognized national cultural asset, was constructed in the final years of the Taisho Era (1912-1926) for the engineer Hans Hunter and his family, who owned and operated the former Mitate Tin Mine. The building was constructed with logs and included Western-style bathroom facilities and steam heating, giving in a Western feeling that was quite distinctive for the era. Today it remains an architecturally significant structure, and in recent years its ‘clubhouse’ feel has made it popular among young people. England House features a small museum on the history of the Mitate Tin Mine and Mr. Hunter's life in Mitate. |
